Shiseido America Unveils Americas Innovation Center in East Windsor Township

Mayor Janice S. Mironov and Council Member Denise Daniels joined Katsunori Yoshida, Executive Vice President, Shiseido Americas Innovation Center, and Shiseido executives for a ribbon cutting ceremony unveiling the new Shiseido Americas Innovation Center, a newly enhanced expanded facility in East Windsor to accommodate advanced R&D activities in the Americas.

The East Windsor R&D site, which has more than tripled from 6,600 square feet to 22,000 square feet, will now be home to a number of functions previously housed in Japan, including development of product information, product safety assurance, and intellectual property management. The larger space and scope of responsibilities in the region will also result in an increase in the number of researchers based locally. The Americas Innovation Center is also part of Shiseido’s global strategy for the future, Vision 2020, which seeks to enhance brand value, and create innovative products based on consumer insights and values.

Mayor Mironov stated, “This is a proud and exciting day for East Windsor as Shiseido brings their expertise in R&D to our community attracting new research talent to our town and providing East Windsor the noteworthy distinction of literally being at the center of global innovation. The Americas Innovation Center boldly exemplifies our Township’s Einstein’s Alley vision of actively promoting and siting high tech high growth research based companies in East Windsor. This strategic step by Shiseido underscores that the Township has successfully attracted a large cluster of pharma companies here in our community, along these Route 571 and 535 corridors as well as in the area of our NJ Turnpike interchange 8.”

Mayor Mironov noted, “We are excited that global cosmetics giant Shiseido, one of our preeminent companies and community-minded corporate neighbors, continues on such a significant growth pathway here in East Windsor. Shiseido also has taken major environmental initiatives locally, representing a great example in terms of a business model, a community model and an environmental leader, and that’s really an unbeatable combination.”

This enhanced R&D Americas Innovation Center is part of Shiseido America’s current on-going expansion in East Windsor which is adding 75,000 square feet of business space and enlarging its building footprint to 311,000 square feet. The project includes an interior addition of a 30,000 square foot mezzanine for office use, and conversion of some warehouse space to manufacturing space use. The expansion will accommodate company growth as well as the relocation to East Windsor of the operations and employees of the Monroe Township based Davlyn Industries. Shiseido America, Inc. also owns an additional 40 acres adjacent to this site for future potential growth.

Shiseido America, Inc., a subsidiary of the Japanese-based corporation Shiseido Company LTD, established its operations in East Windsor in 1998. Shiseido Company LTD, now the third largest cosmetics company in the world, develops upscale cosmetics, sun care products, fragrances and professional salon hair care products. The East Windsor location is Shiseido’s major production site for the NARS, Bare Escentuals, and Shiseido brands in the North American region.

In 2013, Shiseido completed another expansion at the East Windsor facility, adding 54,580 square feet to their warehouse facility, allowing the company to handle a gradual shift of distribution from their Oakland, NJ facility to East Windsor and increased space for the handling of the Company’s innovative cosmetics brands, including Shiseido, NARS and Bare Escentuals.
