East Windsor Township Achieves Silver Level Sustainable Jersey Certification
Published on October 27, 2015
Mayor Janice S. Mironov announced that East Windsor Township has been awarded Silver Level Certification from Sustainable Jersey. Sustainable Jersey is a certification program available to municipalities in New Jersey that want “to go green, save money, and take steps to sustain long term environmental quality for their community.”
A municipality must earn at least 350 points from Sustainable Jersey to be certified at the Silver Level. East Windsor Township, which already has been certified and re-certified for Bronze Level achievement, was approved for Silver Level Sustainable Jersey Certification with 34 actions in 14 categories for a total of 355 points.
Mayor Mironov noted that, “East Windsor earned Silver Level Certification action points for many Township initiated programs and actions previously undertaken by Mayor and Council Members with support from staff and committee volunteers, including creation of a farmland preservation plan, development of an open space plan, inventory and upgrade of municipal buildings for energy efficiency, community recycling/paper shredding events, Buy Local campaign, "Cut it and Leave it" program, Backyard Composting program, tree protection ordinance, environmental assessment ordinance, sustainable land use commitment, green building policy and community outreach programs.” Mayor Mironov continued, “This Silver Level Certification further recognizes and underscores the Township efforts in recycling, environmental resource protection, energy conservation, sustainable land use practices, and furthermore enables East Windsor Township to be eligible for future grants and funding opportunities. We have long been committed to the proposition that going green helps preserve our earth and saves money.”
The municipal East Windsor Green Team members include: Chairperson Ronald Balint, Bill Askenstedt, Richard Brand, Patrick Condon, John Donnelly, Gary Fournier, Edward Kelley, Lenox Ng, Student Members Virpartap Grewal, Rithesh Neelamagam, Jay Vaingankar, and Council Members Peter Yeager and John Zoller, and Mayor Janice Mironov. Mayor Mironov thanked the efforts of the East Windsor Green Team, along with volunteer intern Yona Kornsgold, for the Township’s exciting “green” recognition.
Launched in 2009, Sustainable Jersey is a 100% voluntary certification program for municipalities in New Jersey, and each town can choose whether it wishes to get certified and the actions it wants to do in order to achieve their goal. East Windsor Township’s efforts will be acknowledged at the New Jersey State League of Municipalities’ convention in November at a Sustainable Jersey event.
