New Jersey Turnpike Finally Opens Bridge Directly Linking Turnpike Interchange 8 and NJ Route 133 in East Windsor Township

Mayor Janice S. Mironov announced that the New Jersey Turnpike Authority has advised the Township that the bridge over Route 33 directly linking East Windsor Turnpike Interchange 8 and NJ Route 133 will be opening on or about September 12, weather permitting.

With the bridge opening, part of the Turnpike Widening Program, motorists exiting the Turnpike at East Windsor Interchange 8 will be able to directly access Route 133 westbound, and motorists traveling eastbound on Route 133 will be able to directly access the Turnpike at Interchange 8. These drivers will no longer be required to cross Route 33 using the traffic signal underneath. All other movements in this area are unaffected.

Mayor Mironov stated, "The New Jersey Turnpike created many local traffic issues by opening the new East Windsor Interchange 8 earlier this year without the accompanying planned and needed infrastructure and improvements in place, such as this bridge, left-turning lanes and clear signing and road markings. Accordingly, we are relieved that the new bridge is finally opening and hopefully will be a step forward in helping to facilitate better safety and traffic flow, also reducing periodic traffic delays for residents in the area of Exit 8." Mayor Mironov continued, "The Bridge will provide for direct access by motorists between East Windsor Exit 8 and Route 133 without the use of a traffic signal, thereby improving traffic flow in the area of the relocated Interchange." Mayor Mironov added, “East Windsor Township will continue to pro-actively work with the New Jersey Turnpike Authority through the widening project, so that the outstanding work and many remaining improvements and remedial work are addressed, as the Turnpike Authority moves forward in completing the entire project.”

The entire New Jersey Turnpike Widening Project, according to the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, remains set for completion in mid-2014. At the completion of the project, there will be a 12-lane dual-dual car-truck roadway from Interchange 6 to Interchange 9. Currently, south of Interchange 8A and prior to East Windsor Interchange 8, the number of travel lanes is halved from six to three, creating congestions and logjams especially during peak travel hours. The NJ Turnpike Interchange 6 to 9 Widening Program consists of approximately 35 miles of road widening and associated interchange improvements from Interchange 6, in Mansfield Township Burlington County (Milepost 48) to just south of Interchange 9 in East Brunswick Township, Middlesex County (Milepost 83).
