East Windsor Township Presents Rita Teubner the 2012 Sylvia Weiss Senior Citizen Award for Outstanding Service as a Volunteer

East Windsor Township Mayor Janice S. Mironov presented Rita Teubner the 2012 “Sylvia Weiss Senior Citizen Award for Outstanding Service as a Volunteer”, at a recent ceremony.

Rita Teubner, a resident of East Windsor since 1972, joined the East Windsor Rescue Squad, District II in 1974, and is a charter member of East Windsor Volunteer Rescue Squad, District II. Rita was an active riding member for over 37 years, covering multiple shifts each week. Rita also was a integral participant in the administrative operations of the Squad, serving as President from 1995 through 2004 and in 2006, as well as terms as Vice President, Treasurer and First Lieutenant. Rita Teubner continues to serve with the Squad’s Auxiliary and participates in numerous events including the annual Senior Holiday party.

In addition, Rita Teubner is a charter member of the East Windsor Township Domestic Violence Victims Response Team created in 1998, and covers 12 hour shifts several times a month, responding to area police departments to provide immediate assistance to victims of domestic violence. Rita is an important and long-term member of the Response Team, which works collaboratively with the East Windsor Police Department, Womanspace, Inc. and the Mercer County Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault provider to provide immediate service to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

Mayor Mironov praised the honoree stating, “Rita Teubner’s long-term volunteer involvement demonstrates a passion and deep dedication to assisting people in need of emergency medical services and providing caring and support to domestic violence victims. Rita’s volunteerism has greatly enriched many people’s lives and sets a marvelous example for everyone of all ages of helping others and giving back to the community.”

The Sylvia Weiss Senior Citizen Award for Outstanding Service as a Volunteer, presented annually by East Windsor Township, recognizes a senior citizen who has exhibited outstanding service through volunteerism to the community by way of schools, religious institutions, service organizations or directly to the public. Sylvia Weiss is a former East Windsor Township Council Member, past Council senior citizen advisor and chairperson of the Commission on Aging and was instrumental in the original formation of the senior citizen program. The Selection Committee included Council Member Alan Rosenberg, Chief of Police William Spain and Commission on Aging Chairperson Ondina Jeffers.
