Published on May 22, 2012
Mayor Janice S. Mironov was presented with a plaque from Pam Mount, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees for Sustainable Jersey, recognizing East Windsor Township for achieving Bronze Level Sustainable Jersey Certification. Sustainable Jersey is a certification program that supports community efforts to improve the environment by providing New Jersey municipalities with tools and training, and financial incentives to support and reward communities as they pursue sustainability programs.
East Windsor Township earned a minimum of 150 action points to be certified, including satisfaction of required priority actions and creation of a municipal Green Team. East Windsor received action points for many previously initiated Township programs and actions undertaken by Mayor Janice Mironov and Council Members, including creation of a farmland preservation plan, inventory and upgrade of municipal buildings for energy efficiency, community recycling/paper shredding events, Buy Local campaign, “Cut it and Leave it” program, Backyard Composting program, tree protection ordinance, environmental assessment ordinance, sustainable land use commitment, green building policy and community outreach programs.
Mayor Mironov stated, “The Township has long demonstrated a commitment to protecting the environment, which is underscored by numerous programs and actions that promote recycling, environmental resource protection, energy conservation and sustainable land use practices. East Windsor appreciates the Sustainable Jersey program, which advocates these same goals and offers new opportunities for municipalities to identify and promote environmentally-sensitive and constructive polices and activities.” Mayor Mironov continued, “It is an honor for East Windsor to be recognized with the bronze level certification, which publicly affirms the commitment of the Township to design and implement sound fiscally responsibile policies and programs to further sustainability goals in our community. East Windsor looks forward to continuing to build on this recognition and create further awareness and new opportunities to protect and enchance our environment.”
Mayor Mironov recognized and praised resident Rohit Palayekar, a high school junior in our East Windsor Regional School District, for his excellent volunteer efforts in assisting the municipality to achieve Sustainable Jersey certification. Rohit interned with Township during the summer of 2011, is a student member of the Township Clean Communities Committee and was appointed by the Mayor to the Municipal Green Team.
Launched in 2009, Sustainable Jersey is a certification program for municipalities in New Jersey. New Jersey is the first state in the nation to have a comprehensive sustainability program for communities that links certification with strong state and private financial incentives, and a fully resourced program of technical support and training. Sustainable Jersey is 100% voluntary and each town can choose whether it wishes to get certified and the actions it wants to do in order to achieve their goal.
