Published on December 10, 2018
Mayor Janice S. Mironov and Green Team members were presented with the Sustainable Jersey Silver Level Certification by Sustainable Jersey Program Manager Samantha McGraw. Sustainable Jersey is a certification program for municipalities that want to go green, save money and take steps to sustain their quality of life over the long term. Launched in 2009, Sustainable Jersey is a 100% voluntary certification program for municipalities in New Jersey.
East Windsor was approved again for Silver Level Sustainable Jersey Certification with 37 actions in 14 categories for a total of 375 points. East Windsor Township previously earned Silver Level Sustainable Jersey Certification in 2015, with 34 actions in 14 categories for a total of 355 points. Prior to achieving Silver Level Certification, East Windsor Township earned Bronze Level Sustainable Jersey Certification in 2011 and 2014. East Windsor earned silver certification action points for many Township initiated programs and actions undertaken by Mayor Mironov and Council Members, including creation of a farmland preservation plan, development of an open space plan, inventory and upgrade of municipal buildings for energy efficiency, community recycling/paper shredding events, business recognition programs, "Cut it and Leave it" program, Backyard Composting program, tree protection ordinance, environmental assessment ordinance, sustainable land use commitment, green building policy and community outreach programs.
Sustainable Jersey Program Manager Samantha McGraw praised East Windsor for their active sustainability efforts and for reaching this significant level noting that only 11 municipalities statewide have achieved Sustainable Jersey silver certification in 2018.
Mayor Mironov stated, “This certification recognizes the Township’s pro-active efforts in recycling, environmental resource protection, energy conservation, sustainable land use practices, and furthermore enables East Windsor Township to be eligible for future grants and funding opportunities. We are extremely proud of the substantial achievements of our municipality and this prestigious statewide recognition, and the dedicated efforts of our many volunteers. ‘Green’ programs such as open space and farmland preservation and tree replacement efforts have always been a priority of East Windsor Township. We appreciate the opportunity to demonstrate our level of achievement with Sustainable Jersey, and we are honored to be recertified as a statewide Silver Level municipality.”
