Mayor Janice S. Mironov, joined by Council Members Denise Daniels, Alan Rosenberg and Perry Shapiro, as well as Hovione executives Hovione New Jersey General Manager Marco Gil, Past President of U.S. Operations David Hoffman, Hovione Portugal Trade and Investment Agency CFO and Executive Board Member Luis Castro Enriques, and Trade and Investment Counselor, Portuguese Trade and Investment Agency Rui Boavista Marques, held a groundbreaking for the major expansion project being undertaken by Hovione, a Portuguese based pharmaceutical company located at 40 Lake Drive in the vicinity of East Windsor NJ Turnpike Exit 8.

The expansion will add an additional 28,000 square feet to the existing 24,000 square foot facility, and is expected to add approximately 60 new jobs to the current 50 person workforce. The expansion will allow for a new commercial spray dryer unit to complement their existing pilot unit, which will be specifically designed to handle intermediate drug products. In addition, the expansion will more than double the drug substance capacity at the site to support the needs of the current and future customer base. The overall investment is part of the company’s strategy to increase its global development and commercial capacity to meet the increasing demands of Hovione’s customers. The company anticipates the expanded facility to be fully operational by mid-2017.

Mayor Mironov stated, “The Hovione expansion plan is great news for the Township and another sign of our business vibrancy, once again especially in the pharmaceutical field. Hovione represents for East Windsor another high-tech, high growth research and development pharmaceutical-related company in keeping with our Einstein’s Alley designation and vision.” Mayor Mironov continued, “This doubling of size and capacity marks a significant investment by Hovione in East Windsor, bringing new tax dollars, not only ensuring existing jobs but doubling the local workforce adding large numbers of new jobs in our community. We are gratified that Hovione has found East Windsor and their strategic location at East Windsor NJ Turnpike Exit 8 to be such a beneficial home for their business, and that their business is on such a positive growth pathway here.”

Dr. Marco Gil, General Manager of Hovione New Jersey stated, “The expansion in East Windsor is a very exciting moment for us, for our customers and for the local community. This is an important step to strengthen our continued commitment to the pharmaceutical industry and to the patients by bringing innovative technologies and services to the pharmaceutical industry. This site will provide a unique offering in drug substance, spray drying, and drug product manufacturing services. East Windsor Township has been very supportive of Hovione throughout the years and this was a key element in investing further. Therefore, we are excited to strengthen our presence in East Windsor and creating highly qualified jobs in the local community.”
